History of Costume. Fashion is changing. What was in fashion some time ago is out of fashion nowadays. In various periods of history people had different ideas of beauty. In Britain during the reign of Oliver Cromwell (17th century) clothes were very somber and sober. Cromwell was a Puritan. He preferred drab and black colors. Charles II who ruled Britain later in sharp contrast to Cromwell enjoyed elegant garments. Men and women showed off their wealth wearing silk, woolen and plush clothing. They wore rich jewelry, lace cuffs and tucks. Children wore the same style of clothing as their parents. In the18th century women became victims of their wish to match popular idea of beauty: slim bodies, tight waists and pale appearance. The 20 th century made fashion universal, democratic and emancipated. The Russians match the European standards of fashion. But we have our own history, our roots and traditions. A traditional Russian costume may be on one hand modest and simple and on the other hand bright and picturesque. Russian women used to wear long- sleeved shirts and sarafans done up the buttons. They decorated their garments with kokoshniks and necklaces. Fashions come and go but there are things that remain in Russian soul. Women often decorate their costumes with embroidery, lace and shawl.
